Vendor Spotlight: Devin Sooley of The Social Butterfly NL/64 Creative NL
I've been noticing a lot of buzz on Instagram and TikTok lately about a new trend in the wedding industry: wedding day content creators. Naturally, I was curious about what this new service involves and how it could benefit my bridal clients. So, I decided to go straight to the source and reached out to local vendor, Devin Sooley to get the inside scoop!
Can you tell me a bit about yourself and how you got started in the photography industry?
I started photography in 2010 when I bought my first camera and took photos of my dog, eventually a teacher in my grade 10 school asked me to shoot her wedding video – stressed, nervous, anxious – I covered it for her looking back it was awful video but that started my wedding career to where it is now offering multiple services and covering over 700 weddings.
What inspired you to offer wedding day content creation?
Seeing the trend and service peak in the states I always am inspired to offer new and forthcoming products to people in NL – something Newfoundland is usually not so quick to adapt – the content creation offers a service at a very affordable price for people to get some video content of their day – everyone deserves to have their big days memories captured for life.
Can you walk us through the process of your wedding day content creation services?
When you inquire about your wedding date and we are available the process is streamline, a booking proposal is sent to your email which will walk you through a step by step process to gather your information, wedding details, and preferred service and payment information. A month before the big day we will set up a quick call to run over details of the day. When the day comes expect me to become a addition to your bridal party – a behind the scenes constant capture of relatable content without interfering with your professional creators. 24 hours after your wedding you will receive a email with a link where you can view and download all your videos and photos for you to share and post.
What trends are you seeing in wedding day content creation?
Many are looking for videos more than photo creation through the service – we try not to interfere and take time away from the busy schedule for so much “trend” videos, instead we will find opportunities to grab a selfie, get your guests to interact with us. Trends aren’t forever but well shot content is and that is what we provide on a wedding day.
In what ways do you think wedding day content creation is changing the wedding photography industry?
There are many photographers who oppose this service – seeing it as a dilution of the profession, but I make it clear in my branding and messaging that this service is an addition and will never be a replacement for your photography or professional videographer. The main changing factor is that it gives the photographer a chance to focus on the main moments while I can capture the behind the scenes of the day and get a different interaction from guest when they see a phone compared to a professional camera.
What do you enjoy most about photographing weddings and creating content for couples?
Honestly, it’s just capturing the moments that they will cherish forever – it’s as simple as that, having the opportunity and trust to capture such a important moment for them one that has been planned over for months if not years it is quite a great honour and privilege to use my art and creativity to capture that for them.
Can you share any memorable moments or experiences you've had while capturing weddings?
Honestly the best moments I have is gaining such a connection to my couples, I have many couples that were completely strangers to me to now becoming my friends who I visit on a weekly bases, our kids hang out, we have group chats, and more! Now this is not the case for every wedding but even on the day of it is such a big and special occasion that on that day we all become friends and the memorable moments just continue to happen every single time I’m at a wedding.
